Apart from the main golf course itself where you play the game of Golf, a Golf club consists of other areas of activities such as the driving range, chipping and putting practice areas, club house, restaurants and bars, etc. Each golf club usually prescribes a dress code to be followed while visiting the golf course and it's other activity areas. So before arriving at a new golf club it is advisable to check out the dress code of the club.
As far as playing and practicing Golf is concerned, the following dress code is applicable at golf courses at large. While some golf clubs may have a more relaxed dress code, it is better to follow these basic dressing norms that may work for all golf clubs.
Foe Men, collared or turtle neck Shirts/Tee-shirts with half or full sleeves are permitted. Shirt must be tucked-in.
Ladies too can wear the tops prescribed for Men. Additionally, they are allowed to wear salwar kameez, skirts, round neck/sleeveless tee shirts/blouses. Some golf courses may not allow salwar kameez. When wearing blouses or sleeveless, it is advisable to keep in mind the culture of the country and the golf course they are playing at, so as not to offend anyone with revealing dresses.
Choose good quality material for your tops, such as cotton that has good moisture absorbing properties, or specially made synthetic stretchable fabric that allows sweat to evaporate. Fitting should be appropriate and not too tight, so as to make it easy for you to make your swing movements unrestricted.
During winters, you may add a sweater, vest, light jacket, or wind-cheater to keep yourself warm.
Men are permitted to wear full length Trousers, Golf Shorts & Cargo Shorts. Some golf courses may not permit cargo shorts. Shorts should fall just above your knee-cap. Both pants and shorts should have belt loops. Wearing a belt is a must when playing golf.
Ladies wearing independent tops/blouses can match them up with suitable pants as prescribed for Men or Capri pants or skirts/skorts. Capri pants are a popular choice among ladies.
Golfers need to wear appropriate sport shoes that can provide them good grip on the turf and better traction and stability while swinging the golf club. Golf Shoes with soft spikes made of hard rubber or plastic are recommended. Sneakers with a good grip will also work well if you do not wish to invest in expensive golf shoes. Cricket batting shoes are also a good alternative to the expensive golf shoes. Shoes must be worn along with socks.
While playing during the monsoon season, waterproof shoes are great as they help keep your feet dry.
Wearing a belt is part of a good and acceptable golf dress. A belt ensures that your pants fit comfortably around your waist while you are playing. Leather or rubber belts, or stretchable woven elasto-diene belts are popular choices among golfers.
A cap or a hat is an optional part of a golf dress. Although not mandatory, it is advisable to wear a cap or hat as it helps keep your head cool while playing and also aids in seeing the golf ball as it flies far away in the sky.
Needless to mention, to avoid feeling awkward specially when you are a visitor at a non-home course, it is advisable to stick to the basic dress code of golf. Also, choose your attire with matching colors that are not too flashy or bold patterned.
